There are so many things to think of when purchasing a new home. What color to paint the walls, should you get new flooring and on and on! You should be thinking about the tools and products every homeowner should own. Before owning my own home, I had the pleasure of growing up in an ETERNAL fixer-upper (thanks Mom and Dad). All kidding aside, I am happy that I have been helping my parents with their home improvement my whole life. …

DIY RUSTIC FIREPLACE MANTEL
Have you ever been Pin-spired? You know when you’re on Pinterest and find the solution to a problem, and eureka you’ve been Pin-spired. So maybe I made up the word (shoulder shrug)? But that’s what happened to me after finding this awesome pin and blog, Addicted 2 Decorating. There I found the post on how to make a DIY fireplace mantel. She had created exactly what I’d envisioned and had a great tutorial. I decided it was high time that my fireplace needed its very own DIY rustic fireplace mantel. Unfortunately for me, I have a unique fireplace from the ’50s. That meant I had to come up with my version to suit my “unique” fireplace.

ALL NATURAL DIY HAND SANITIZER
****Update March 13, 2020****
Hi there. Due to the Corona virus I am recommending you follow the CDC guidelines to make at-home hand sanitizer. Their guidelines are as follows:
1. DIY hand sanitizers should contain 70% rubbing alcohol. It is not recommended to use vodka, as vodka only contains 40% alcohol. You will also need aloe which can be found at drug stores. Aloe will make up 40% of the hand sanitizer. You can also add a few drops of essential oil. I add two drops of tea tree oil, two drops of lavender and two drops of peppermint.
2. Hand sanitizer is NOT a replacement for washing your hands! Simply applying hand sanitizer to soiled hands will not kill the virus. Make sure to wash and dry your hands before applying.
3. Dry your hands thoroughly before applying hand sanitizer. A study conducted last year found that wet mucus’s protect the flu virus. Since not much is known about the Covid-19’s behavior the CDC is taking all the same precautions as it does with the flu virus.
4. Be liberal with the amount that you are applying. Allow sufficient time for you to let the sanitizer dry on its own. That is the purpose and function of the alcohol, to sit on your hands and kill the germs!
5. DO NOT RELY ON ESSENTIAL OILS! I know you found my blog post because of keywords like “all-natural” and “alcohol free.” This is not the time to be using that type of hand sanitizer. I’m a healthcare worker, so I fully understand that a full-strength hand sanitizer is necessary now!
I sincerely hope and pray that during this time you all stay safe and healthy. I am following the CDC’s guild lines on making hand sanitizer right now. I will switch back to my own recipe if and when things go back to normal. *******
It’s that time of year again when your little ones go back to school and bring home more than homework. This is the beginning of cold and flu season! During this time of year, we all need to take a little more care and keep those nasty germs off our hands. I have a wonderful recipe for a natural hand sanitizer that all my little nieces and nephews call candy cane spray.

HOMEMADE BUG SPRAY FOR THE HOME
I’m in love with my homemade bug spray. I think it’s safe to say that I have a strong dislike, nay a hatred of all creepy, crawly bugs and so began my war with them. I do realize that they are beneficial to the garden and the ecosystem so if they’re outside I’ll leave them be, but, if they enter my humble abode it’s on like Donkey Kong. Just the mere mention that one is near me will make me run like Usain Bolt. NOT KIDDING. That has led me on a quest to ban them from my house. With fall fast approaching, there is no time like the present to prepare. This excellent homemade bug spray is safe for the kiddos and pets and makes the house smell fresh and invigorating.

HOW TO PAINT A BRICK FIREPLACE
Painting your fireplace is a big deal. Like, there’s no going back, kind of big deal. If you painted your fireplace and didn’t like it, you could sandblast the paint off, but it most definitely likely would damage your brick. So please make sure that painting your brick fireplace is something you can live with. Now that you have a strong feeling of impending doom, some good news. Painting your brick fireplace is cheap and easy! With proper preparation and tools, it is one of the easiest and most rewarding DIYs I’ve done to date.

TOP 10 MUST HAVE TOOLS FOR DIYers
I. LOVE. TOOLS. Power tools, hand tools, crafting tools, and dental tools (I was a dental assistant for 17 years). It wasn’t easy narrowing down my top 10 must-have tools. Only after purchasing our house, I realized what a behemoth this house would be in terms of fixing things. It sure has taken me for a ride. Along the way, I’ve found that without specific tools fixing this beautiful house just wouldn’t have been possible.

DIY INDUSTRIAL DOUBLE CONDUIT CURTAIN ROD
I posted a picture on Pinterest over five years ago of my DIY double industrial conduit curtain rod, and now it had over 150,000 re-pins collectively, so I decided to post the tutorial.
UPDATE: As of 8/19/202 this project has been featured on shared.com, thecottagemarket.com, houseofhawthornes.com , thesnug.com (now owned by RealSimple), Momtastic.com , cheetsheet.com, and bloggerbests.com.
A little over a year ago my husband left on an overseas trip for three weeks, so I figured while he was gone, I would kick some butt and make my DIY industrial double curtain rods and paint the kitchen cabinets. WHAT. WAS. I. THINKING.
