If you’ve gone on Pinterest any time in the last 5 years you’ve seen the “toilet bomb,” a DIY fizzy cleaner that is easy to make and smells fresh. Well, they are all missing a little somthin somthin. PUMICE. As a dental professional, I’ve used pumice on a daily basis to clean little kido’s teeth. Being the daughter in law of a Janitorial company owner I also know that using a pumice stone is sometimes the only way to remove hard to clean stains inside a toilet bowl. Well, friends, I’ve meshed the two worlds together and made a DIY fizzing pumice toilet bowl cleaning powder that works really well and smells even better!!
Let me be honest. I jumped on the toilet bomb bandwagon just like thousands of my fellow Pintersters and while they smell great and are natural, they don’t really “clean” the toilet. Plus, they took more time to make than I liked. This got me thinking. Why not use the pumice powder I use to clean teeth in my own toilet bowl cleaner? So, I’ve tested a few different versions and have concocted the perfect mix of cleaning power and fresh smelling bathroom goodness.
On a side note, I don’t have the time to sit and make these into toilet tabs or bombs. I just simply wanted a similar experience of the toilet bomb but with a stronger cleaning power. That’s why MY cleaning formula is in a powder form and not in a tablet. And, ain’t nobody got time for that!

Supplies to make the fizzing pumice powder are:
Essential Oils: Lavender, Eucalyptus, Tee Tree and Cinnamon leaf
Shaker container or Shaker lid for mason jars
TIP: You can
Measuring cups and Funnel
A mixing bowl and fork
Let’s make the powder
Make sure that everything you are working with is completely dry! Any moisture will create a reaction with the citric acid.
Add 1 cup each of the baking soda, pumice powder to your bowl.
Using your fork stir the mixture well, breaking up any clumps you may find.
Add essential oils as follows:
10 drops of Tea Tree oil (fights germs, bacteria, and viruses)
10 drops of Cinnamon leaf oil (Antibacterial and antiseptic)
15 drops of Eucalyptus oil (Natural germicide)
15 drops of Lavender oil (Naturally antibacterial)
***You can customize this to your liking by adding or subtracting other essential oils. Lemon oil (Antiviral and antibacterial), Rosemary oil (Antibacterial and antiseptic), Peppermint (Antibacterial), Thyme (one of the most powerful against germs).***
Stir the mixture toughly making sure to disperse the oils throughout.
Add 1/2 cup of citric acid and stir well.
Using a funnel, add the mixture to a shaker bottle.
TO USE YOUR DIY FOAMING PUMICE TOILET CLEANING POWDER:
Flush the toilet and let it refill completely. Shake the pumice cleaner all around the edges of the water line. Of course, pay close attention to any areas that may have some staining in them. Wait 5 minutes and scrub with your toilet brush. I usually let it sit an additional 10 minutes after I have scrubbed before I flush.
Viola, sparkling clean and smelling super fresh.
I do realize that the initial cost of the ingredients can be steep but I’ve calculated that minus the cost of the essential oils each batch will cost you $ 4.37. Not too shabby! I did not include the cost of the essential oils because they will last for about 2 years if you make this mixture monthly. Also, there is SOOOOO many household uses for essential oils. I have an AMAZING degreaser/granite cleaner that I swear by as well as an anti-bug spray and a wonderful DIY poo-pourri.
When I compared this to the natural cleaners on the market I found that it is almost always cheaper and it’s one of the only powders that I found. It seems that almost all the natural cleaners are gels or liquids.
I use this mixture once a week to keep my toilet super sparkly and smelling fresh. Don’t keep this in the bathroom because the moister level in the air will ruin the powder. Store in a dry cabinet.

Doesn’t the baking soda neutralize the cleaning power of the citric acid?
Melissa says
Hi there Amber! The baking soda in this recipe is not meant to boost the cleaning power of anything. It is a filler and scent carrier for as the pumice is not the best at that. Thanks for your comment.
