Welcome back, friends! Today, I have a healthier fabric refresher alternative to share with you. This spray offers a quick and natural way to freshen up your space.
As many of you know, our family’s journey towards a healthier lifestyle took an important turn after my husband’s open-heart surgery.
We decided to eliminate synthetic chemicals and embrace natural alternatives. And, believe it or not, my husband even used to freshen up his jeans with a well-known commercial spray. I’ve got just the perfect solution for you – a DIY non-toxic Febreze dupe spray that will leave your home smelling fresh and safe!

Why Go Non-Toxic:
Synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals found in commercial air fresheners can harm our health and environment. This makes me a sad clown! As we embarked on our toxin-free living, we realized the importance of reducing our exposure to such substances. Plus, with my husband’s love for freshening up his jeans with a quick spritz, finding an eco-friendly alternative became a mission!
Ridding our house of chemical fragrances is a bit more challenging than I had anticipated. I love Dawn dish power wash spray and I used to love burning yummy-smelling candles year round. I must confess I still use the Dawn powerwash until I can find a more non-toxic alternative but have completely given up on burning candles.
The Power of DIY:
Making your own non-toxic Febreze dupe spray is easier than you might think. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also have full control over the ingredients, ensuring a safe and more natural product for you and your family.
I make a killer granite and kitchen cleaning spray and an amazing poo-pourri that I swear by! If you are a long-time reader then you will know that my poo-pourri recipe has saved us from the stink when we travel and during the long hospital stays!! See the bottom of this post for those articles.
Being able to control the chemicals that our family is using has become a passion project for me over the last few years. I DIY these concoctions and trial them at my house for at least a year before I pass the recipes on to you!
“Fabric-safe” essential oil recipes that you can use in your DIY Febreze dupe spray:
Feel free to mix and match the essential oils to create your unique scents. These recipes use a total of 20 drops, which is perfect for your DIY Febreze fabric refresher spray. Remember to dilute the essential oils with water and vodka or witch hazel. Properly diluting your essential oils will prevent them from staining and ruing your fabric.
Not to toot my own horn but I have been working with some of America’s leading fragrance developers and even have a whole Etsy store (moonlightmerc) where I sell my wonderful concoctions! I know a thing or two about mixing essential oils to make them smell amazeballs!
Before using any essential oil on your fabrics, it’s always a good idea to do a patch test on a small inconspicuous area of the fabric to ensure compatibility and avoid any potential staining.

Ingredients for the dupe freshening Spray:
Let’s dive into the magical concoction that will have your home smelling fantastic:
Distilled Water – 2 cups: Provides a neutral base for the spray. You can use bottled or filtered water in a pinch.
Vodka or Witch Hazel – 1/4 cup: Helps to disperse the essential oils and acts as a natural preservative. This is what the essential oil will grab onto when you shake up the spray. I have used rubbing alcohol as well.
Essential Oils – 15-20 drops: Select your favorite scents! Consider using lavender, citrus, eucalyptus, or peppermint for their refreshing properties. ALWAYS spot-test your fabrics to ensure that the essential oils don’t ruin or stain your fabric. Some synthetic fabrics do not like essential oils!
Baking Soda – 1 tablespoon: Neutralizes odors and leaves a light, clean scent.
A Spray Bottle: Make sure it’s clean and repurposed or recycle one to reduce waste. You will want to make sure that it is at least a 17oz bottle or bigger to accommodate this recipe.
DIY Instructions:
In a mixing bowl, combine the distilled water and vodka or witch hazel.
Add the baking soda to the mixture and stir well until dissolved.
Carefully pour the mixture into your spray bottle using a funnel if necessary.
Now, it’s time to add the essential oils. Choose the scents that work best for your family. Keep in mind that you should test the spray on the fabric you intend to use in an inconspicuous place. I find that adding oils to the bottle is the best way to ensure a strong fragrance.
Label your creation – and let it stand for 24 hours to blend the scents. The strength of the scents really needs time to develop or “bloom” as I like to call it.
Spray Away, the Natual Way!
Once the 24 hours are up, it’s time for the moment of truth! Shake your DIY non-toxic Febreze dupe spray gently, then spritz it around your home, on linens, or even as my husband did on those jeans (they’ll smell better than ever!).
To ensure safety and avoid potential issues, here are some additional tips:
- Perform Patch Tests: Before using any essential oil on fabric, perform a patch test on a small, inconspicuous area. Apply a diluted solution of the essential oil to the fabric and let it sit for a few hours. Check for any discoloration or adverse reactions.
- Choose the Right Fabric: Certain fabrics may be more susceptible to staining or damage from essential oils. Avoid using strong essential oils on delicate fabrics or those that are not color-fast.
- Proper Dilution: The recipes I provided have a total of 20 drops of essential oils, which should be diluted in 1/4 cup of vodka or witch hazel and 2 cups of distilled water. This dilution should generally be safe, but if you notice any issues, consider reducing the amount of essential oil used.
- Spot Cleaning: In case of accidental spills or excess spray, spot clean the area immediately to prevent any potential stains or damage.
- Rotate Scents: To minimize the risk of sensitivities or fabric damage, rotate the scents you use on your fabrics and avoid using the same essential oil every time.
- Quality Essential Oils: Always use high-quality, pure essential oils from reputable sources to ensure the best results and safety.
Remember that essential oils are potent, and a little goes a long way. By following these precautions and conducting patch tests, you can enjoy the benefits of these fabric-safe essential oil recipes in your DIY Febreze spray while protecting your fabrics. If you notice any adverse reactions or are unsure about a specific essential oil, it’s best to avoid using it on your fabrics.
Be sure to discontinue immediately if you have any skin reactions. In case of accidental eye spray, rinse your eyes under cool running water for 10 minutes. Consult a doctor if vision is impaired. SincerelySaturday.com and its affiliates take no responsibility for the use or misuse of these recipes. Use at your own risk. Keep out of reach of children and those who don’t know better.

Is this a product that masks smells or actually reduces them? I’m allergic to a lot of fragrances and wonder if it will still work if you leave out the essential oils.

HI there! I made this alternative for folks that have health issues and just want to use natural products. You can omit the essential oils and just use the base. The idea is for the base to “lock onto” the bad fragrance
molecules and help them dissipate as the product dries.
