Assess and Declutter
The first step to achieving a well-organized home is to assess each room and declutter. Take a critical look at your belongings and ask yourself, “Do I need this?” Donate or discard items that no longer serve a purpose or bring you joy. Create designated spaces for essential items and keep surfaces clear for a clean and open look. I am one sentimental person so this is always my hardest task of finally getting organized.
Develop a Cleaning Routine
Maintaining a clean and organized home requires consistency. Develop a cleaning routine that suits your lifestyle, breaking down tasks into manageable chunks. Whether you prefer a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule, having a plan will help you stay on top of chores and prevent clutter from accumulating.
Organize Room by Room
Tackle one room at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Begin with high-traffic areas like the kitchen and living room, then move on to bedrooms, bathrooms, and other spaces. Invest in storage solutions such as baskets, shelves, and containers to maximize space and keep items in order. Arrange items logically and consider the flow of each room for optimal functionality. Home organization does not need to happen overnight! Take your time and tackle one area at a time.
Choose the proper cleaning tools
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to have a great cleaning arsenal at your disposal. I have a secret… I have managed my in-law’s Janitorial company for almost 20 years and have some tools that are invaluable to these professional cleaners.

Melissa, your guide to home organization for the new year is a game-changer! Your tips on decluttering and developing a cleaning routine are spot-on. One extra hack that’s worked wonders for me: utilizing vertical space! Adding wall-mounted shelves or hanging organizers can free up floor space and give a room a more open feel while keeping things easily accessible. Thanks for sharing these great insights!
